Alex Platt Principal Agent of The Platt Group

The Platt Group at Compass

What was your most interesting job before going into real estate?

My family used to own a very popular pizza restaurant at which I was the general manager at for years. While working there, I learned how to provide excellent hospitality and how to deal with problems. All of that has helped me in my career as an agent, and I try and teach my team it all starts with how you treat people.

Where did you grow up?

Born and raised in Lighthouse Point, Florida. My family and I currently reside in Boca Raton.

Growing up, what did you want to be?

Growing up I always loved the movie “Jerry Maguire,” where Tom Cruise was a professional sports agent. I always had it in my head that I wanted to be a sports agent growing up and help athletes land big contracts. Instead, I am helping my clients land big contracts and their dream homes!

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed?

It might sounds cliché, but my absolute favorite and best way to kill stress is to be with my wife and kids. After a long day of showing homes, nothing beats coming home to your family who is waiting to spend time with Dad, and not agent. A close second to that is a great meal out with friends at one of my favorite spots in Boca, like New York Prime or J. Alexanders.

If you could meet any well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why?

Lebron James. He has been in the limelight and is called the greatest basketball player of all time since he was the age of 16. With that crazy amount of pressure he was able to have one of the most prolific careers in all of sports. What I respect and admire the most about him is his commitment to charity and the community. He has donated millions of dollars and has made it his mission to help children get a better education.

Where is South Florida’s best-kept secret?

Depends on what you are looking for! If it’s food, head to Downtown Delray Beach and find yourself at the green market on a sunny Saturday or maybe a cocktail at El Camino on Atlantic Ave! We also have no shortage of waterways to cruise on your boat, the best way to take in South Florida!

What do you love most about the industry?

I love that every transaction is different. Every day you get to meet new people and overcome new challenges. It’s never boring.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job?

Time management. When things are busy, it never seems there is enough time in the day to get everything done. And when things are slow, you tend to have too much time on your hands, and it can be difficult to fill your day. You have to be creative and willing to try EVERYTHING in this business and never more true than when things are slow.

What’s your best advice for generating new leads?

Always put the customer first! When you create relationships that way, people automatically will feel more comfortable with you and are much more likely to refer friends and family.

What are you binge-watching/reading/listening to lately?

Million Dollar Listing on Bravo and anything on Netflix. I have always been trying to listen to at least one new podcast a week, so far some of my favorites have been ones on real estate, naturally 😉

What’s your favorite meal in South Florida?

By far my favorite dish in all of South Florida is the legendary baked shrimp from Greek Islands Taverna in Fort Lauderdale. If you have never been there, GO, and tell them Alex sent you!

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in South Florida?

The Boca Resort & Hotel. The iconic pink tower situated on the beautiful Lake Boca has always been one of my favorites, it is exactly what you think of when you think of Florida luxury.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on the job?

In my first year as an agent, I was showing a family a nice home in Pompano Beach about 1 mile from the ocean. The family was excited to see the house as the pictures online looked great, and I was excited to get one of my first big deals done. We walk in to the house and immediately see what turned out to be a squatter asleep on the kitchen floor! The buyers both looked at me and said maybe this isn’t the house for us, and we got out of there as fast as we could. Till this day I don’t know if that house ever sold or what happened to the squatter who was living his best life that afternoon in Pompano Beach.

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?

I have been to over 60 countries and counting! Travel is the greatest gift you can give yourself. My parents always took my sister and I all over the world growing up, something I want to do with my kids too.

What’s your favorite vacation spot and why?

One of my favorite vacation spots is Blowing Rock, N.C. My family and I have been going there ever since I was a kid. Now that I am a dad, it has been really cool to bring my kids back there and share with them all the things I did as a kid up in the mountains of North Carolina. It is a trip we look forward to every single year.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry?

Always do what’s best for the client and not what’s best for yourself!

Who are your favorite people to follow on social media?

My top three follows right now are: Ryan Serhant, Grant Cardone and David Goggins.
