Joan Bruggink Broker Associate

ONE Sotheby's International Realty, Miami Beach

What was your most interesting job before going into real estate?

I worked for a developer in The Netherlands and was stationed onsite at a project in Suriname, South America, for three months. I was 20 years old, and it was definitely one of the most eye-opening and life changing experiences of my life.

Where did you grow up?

The Netherlands. I found my way to Miami in 2012 as it was my first stop on a six-month backpacking trip in 2010.

Growing up, what did you want to be?

I love animals and originally wanted to be a veterinarian.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed?

I listen to music, usually Afro beats that lift my mood instantly, go for a walk or clean my house.

If you could meet any well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why?

Nefertiti because I’ve been interested in the ancient Egyptian kingdom since I was a kid. Or maybe Socrates for his wisdom. A bonus would be meeting them in their own time.

Where is South Florida’s best-kept secret?

The small hidden beaches along the scenic road through the Florida Keys.

What do you love most about the industry?

I love working with people. It’s rewarding being part of such a big decision in their lives, and I enjoy the “matchmaking” aspect of it – and the challenge of putting together and winning a deal for my clients.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job?

Dealing with inflexible and unprofessional “professionals.”

What’s your best advice for generating new leads?

Nurture your past/current database to create new leads. The best and most loyal clients come from people who know you or know someone that knows you, which makes you start off with a level of trust right away.

What are you binge-watching/reading/listening to lately?

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, Riding the Waves of Culture by Fons Trompenaars, Charles Hampden-Turner and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Lately I have been watching a lot of Kobe Bryant’s talks.

What’s your favorite meal in South Florida?

The chocolate mousse from Dirty French.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in South Florida?

Tough question, there are so many masterpieces here! I love the architecture of Monad Terrace, The Surf Club, One Thousand Museum, Biltmore Hotel, Grove at Grand Bay, Arte and Vizcaya Museum. They are all South Florida icons.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on the job?

I walked into a showing with a client at a two-bedroom condo, and it was full of cats! There must have been around seven of them. There were pads all over the floor and cat hair in every single room.

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?

I love driving motorcycles, and I’m passionate about the environment. I want to empower eco-chic living, combining luxury with sustainability.

What’s your favorite vacation spot and why?

I’ve traveled to 44 countries and countless cities. I want to see as much of the world as I can and enjoy exploring new destinations – so “my favorite spot” is somewhere I haven’t been yet. A few places that left a big impression on me are Bali, South Africa, Suriname, Bolivia and Arizona.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry?

Shorten your learning curve by working with a top producer.

Who are your favorite people to follow on social media?

@ONESIR @Restless.Arch @JeremyAustiin @UberFacts @waterthruskin, @SophiaEsperanza, @JayShetty, @drjoedispenza
