Darren Newby Commercial and Residential Real Estate Specialist, Ancona Realty, Treasure Island - Miami

What was your most interesting job before going into real estate? Before becoming a real estate sales specialist, I founded a rental solutions business to help landlords and property owners fill vacant units, overall increasing their occupancy rates.

Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in Boca Raton, Florida, and I’ve had the incredible opportunity to watch this city develop over the past two decades.

Growing up, what did you want to be? Since a very young age, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur involved with real estate in some way, shape, or form.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed? When I feel stressed, my favorite things to do are go to the gym, meditate, and take walks on the beach or nature trails. These three things combined have allowed me to stay calm and composed under pressure.

If you could meet any well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? If I could meet anyone in the world, it would be Elon Musk. Not only is he a self-educated genius, he is an innovator that has created three multi-billion dollar companies from scratch, and he consistently thinks outside the box.

Where is South Florida’s best-kept secret? I would say Miami’s best kept secret is that there’s a ferris wheel right next to Bayfront Park. Many locals I have talked to had no idea it existed.

What do you love most about the industry? What I love most about real estate is that every client and every property is unique, so you have to constantly conduct new research and provide more value in order to outcompete the other sales specialists.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? I truly don’t think there is any aspect that is too difficult. That’s another thing I like about real estate, it’s that every problem that arises has a solution.

What’s your best advice for generating new leads? The best way to generate new leads is to meet with new people from a vast array of industries every day of the week. Whether you met them from social media, at a café, or at a car show, solely focus on how you can help their business, and eventually referrals will start coming your way.

What are you binge-watching/reading/listening to lately? I have been binge-watching on YouTube creators like Ryan Serhant, Graham Stephan, and MeetKevin.

What’s your favorite meal in South Florida? My favorite meal in Miami is Black Truffle Crust Lobster at Nobu.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in South Florida? I am in love with a lot of buildings in Miami, but if I had to choose one, it would probably be the Porsche Design Tower. I am a car fanatic, so the vehicle elevator is breathtaking and inspiring.

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you? One thing about me that people might find surprising is that I really enjoy creating e-commerce businesses. By creating an online store from the ground up, you learn all of the different aspects of business, such as marketing, manufacturing, negotiating, web design, branding, infrastructure, logistics, and the list continues!

What’s your favorite vacation spot and why? There are a bunch of places I haven’t had the chance to visit yet, but I would say right now my favorite vacation spot is Bimini. The locals are extremely friendly, the beaches are crystal clear, and the diving/fishing is arguably the best in the world.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry? Meet new people, build your database, focus on providing value.

Who are your favorite people to follow on social media? I enjoy following Peter J. Ancona, Oren Alexander, and Julian Johnston.
