Forty years into her real estate career, Karen Matluck still gets butterflies when she meets a new client or sees a property for the first time.
In the last year, Matluck, a luxury consultant with the Matluck Group at Compass, managed to sell over $65 million in real estate, and she still can’t believe it. “It was a nonstop, real-estate-on-steroids kind of year,” she says. “I still don’t know how or when … it’s a whirlwind. I helped 42 buyers and sellers find their places in the world.”
Growing up, Matluck watched her father, who later became her mentor, conduct business on his own terms. He never worked a 9-to-5 job, and he loved entertaining and listening to his clients, who loved him back. The younger Matluck wanted the same experience and followed in her father’s footsteps.
“Everyone has something to teach, and I enjoy listening and learning from them,” she says. “I also love connecting with people, which is why I love real estate.”
Matluck always tries her best to make home purchases and sales as stress-free as possible for clients. They love that she treats them like family, returns calls immediately and has a list of attorneys, electricians, housekeepers and other dependable professionals handy.
The pandemic taught her to be more empathetic, really listen to clients’ needs and steer people away from buying a home for today that won’t suit them in seven years. “COVID opened my eyes to working hard and making sure everyone is heard,” she shares. During the first three months of the pandemic, she took a Matterport camera and rephotographed and videoed all 32 of her listings, because she had a feeling people would be looking online and buying virtually. And it’s been nonstop since then.
Trilingual, Matluck has three children who are licensed to sell real estate, two incredible grandchildren and a third on the way.
