Florida ranks No. 1 for net migration

by John Yellig

The Sunshine State has long been a top relocation destination for Americans, and 2022 was no exception. According to StorageCafe, Florida saw a net influx of 238,000 residents that year, putting it in first place in the U.S.

In 2022, the most recent year for which Census data is available, 736,000 people moved to Florida, while 497,000 people left. Retirees have traditionally comprised a significant portion of new Floridians, but the state’s demographic mix of recent arrivals has broadened, thanks to a strong economy and advantageous tax environment, StorageCafe said.

After Florida, Texas and North Carolina rounded out the top three states for net migration, followed by Arizona and Georgia, giving the Sun Belt a clean sweep of the top five states. On the flip side, the states with the greatest out-migration in 2022 were California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Maryland, according to StorageCafe.
