Florida real estate: Where growth creates opportunity

by Chuck Bonfiglio

Florida has long been a place where people come to build something — a career, a business, a family or a future. And today, real estate remains an important part of what makes that possible.

Recent research from the National Association of REALTORS® shows that real estate accounts for more than one-quarter of Florida’s GDP, the highest percentage of any state in the nation. The industry contributes nearly $474 billion to Florida’s economy, extending its impact well beyond the buying and selling of property.

That strength is part of an even larger economic story. The Florida Chamber Foundation’s 2026 midyear analysis puts Florida’s economy at $1.8 trillion, making it the 14th-largest economy in the world. Florida’s economy also continues to grow, reinforcing the state’s position as a major center for business, investment and opportunity.

Every real estate transaction generates activity across a wide range of industries, from construction, lending and insurance to title services, home improvement and local businesses. Commercial real estate provides the space where companies operate and grow, while residential real estate helps create the communities where their employees live.

That connection between real estate and the broader economy is especially important in a state that continues to attract business and investment.

Florida benefits from a favorable tax environment, a large and diverse workforce, access to domestic and international markets and a climate that encourages entrepreneurship and growth. The state also continues to be a leading destination for new businesses and companies looking for opportunities to expand.

At the same time, Florida continues to attract people who want to live, work and build their futures here. While the pace of growth may change over time, the state’s long-term appeal remains strong — and that continues to support demand for homes, commercial space and investment opportunities.

For real estate investors, those fundamentals matter.

Investment takes many forms here, from rental and second-home properties to commercial buildings, development opportunities and long-term portfolio investments. Florida’s economic scale, continued growth and demand for places to live, work and do business create opportunities across different kinds of real estate.

Of course, markets change, and no investment comes without risk. Florida’s housing market is moving through a period of normalization, which makes local knowledge and careful planning even more important. Successful decisions require an understanding of market conditions and a long-term perspective. Realtors know that better than most.

We spend our careers helping customers evaluate those conditions and make informed decisions about one of the most important investments they may ever make.

We also see firsthand what real estate ownership can mean over time. A home can provide stability and an opportunity to build equity. Investment and commercial properties can become part of a broader financial strategy. And healthy real estate markets help support businesses, jobs and communities.

That perspective should encourage Realtors to think about our own futures as well.

The market knowledge and experience we use every day to help customers can also help us evaluate opportunities to build wealth ourselves, whether that’s through homeownership, investment property, commercial real estate or a diversified portfolio built over time.

Florida’s story has always been one of opportunity. Real estate is central to that story: helping people put down roots, giving businesses room to grow, attracting investment and contributing to the economic strength of communities across our state.

For Realtors, what real estate brings to Florida’s economy is something to be proud of — and it offers an opportunity worth recognizing for our customers’ futures and for our own.
