These small South Florida cities are some of the best in the country

by Emily Marek

Nearly one-third of Americans say they’d prefer to live in the suburbs — but which small towns offer the best options for homeowners and buyers?

Wallethub ranked over 1,300 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 to determine the best small city in America this year. The financial analysis company created their ranking based on 45 metrics that measure affordability, education, health, quality of life and safety.

One South Florida city — Sarasota — ranked in the 92nd percentile, meaning it’s among the top 8% of all small cities in the country. The Gulf Coast town ranked first overall for quality of life, scoring big points for ranking as the city with the most coffee shops per capita.

Further down the list were the Miami-area cities of Boca Raton, which ranked in the 89th percentile; Jupiter, which ranked in the 82nd percentile; Parkland, which ranked in the 79th percentile; and Fort Myers, which ranked in the 78th percentile.

On the flip side, several small South Florida cities appeared at the bottom of Wallethub’s ranking. Dania Beach ranked in the 2nd percentile and Lauderdale Lakes ranked in the 3rd percentile, while Immokalee and Lauderhill both ranked in the 5th percentile. North Miami, Kendall and North Lauderdale ranked in the 6th, 7th and 9th percentiles, respectively.
