The aptly named Florida Tropical House may look like a Miami masterpiece: all-pink exteriors and a waterfront locale. But it’s actually located in Northwest Indiana. It’s also for sale — sort of.

Florida architect Robert Law Weed designed this flamboyant, Flamingo-hued home for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, hoping to promote Florida’s young real estate industry. At the time, Florida had under 2 million residents, and the Florida Tropical House stood as emblem for the state’s evolving beach aesthetic.

Unveiled in Chicago proper, Weed’s creation appeared as part of the Homes of Tomorrow exhibit, where millions of visitors wandered between its art-deco walls. The following year, it was ferried to Beverly Shores where developer Robert Bartlett aimed to build up a resort community. There, the house remains on 225 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline.

Over the years, the Florida Tropical House became something of a local landmark: a reputation which was recognized officially in 1997, when Indiana Landmarks took over, leasing the property from Indiana Dunes National Park. Today, residence at the Florida Tropical House is available through sublease from Indiana Landmarks.

William Beatty and his family have been sub-lessees since the late ’90s. Now, however, they’re looking to sell their lease, which includes 52 more years at the property, for $2.5 million.

Peggy Sayre, of the Dawn McKenna Group with Coldwell Banker Realty, is overseeing that sale. Speaking to Chicago Agent, Sayre highlighted the work the Beattys have done to restore the property. “It was such a personal vision for them to get this up and running.” A vision in pink.

Recently, Sayre said she did a showing at sunset. “We were all on the upstairs veranda … It was a gorgeous, clear day and you could see all the colors of the rainbow,” Sayre said. “It literally took my breath away.”
