A 98-year-old home in Broward County was rescued from demolition this weekend after an activist group helped arrange its relocation.
At the new spot — a city-owned lot on Southwest Third Avenue — the home will be renovated and will function as an office space and historic site.
Built for Judge Fred Shippey in 1913, the house was scheduled to be torn down by a New York–based company that bought the property after it went into foreclosure. But an activist group, Friends of Shippey House, banded together to prevent the demolition. The group helped orchestrate the property’s eventual move about a half-mile away.
“Everyone recognizes that Florida’s history is a more recent history,” said Alysa Plummer, president of the Friends group. “But this is one of the oldest structures in the county, and it should be preserved.”
