Florida is the fastest-growing state in the country for the first time since 1957, a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows.

The Sunshine State’s population has grown steadily since the end of World War II — when its population was 2.44 million. The nation’s third-largest population state has been among the population percentage gain leaders for decades and has consistently shown stronger growth than the national average. 

The number of people calling Florida home grew 1.9% to 22.24 million from 2021 to 2022, surpassing the previous year’s fastest-growing state, Idaho.

Nevada has been the fastest-growing state in the nation for 36 of the last 76 years. Other states that have surged in population percentage growth in recent decades include Arizona, Idaho, Utah, North Dakota and Alaska.
