Every week, we ask a real estate professional for their Short List, a collection of tips and recommendations on an essential topic in real estate. This week, we talked with Claudia Hersman, a broker associate with Avatar Real Estate Services, who shared simple ways to keep in touch with past clients.

5. Right after closing, pass by with a small, welcome home gift such as a small plant, cookies, a fruit basket or something more personal to the client. This is to thank them for the opportunity of representing them in the transaction.

Gift cards from Home Depot or Bed, Bath and Beyond are also a good idea.

4. Offer yourself as a reference for any local business needed for their new home. New owners most likely will need a painter, handyman, general contractor, etc. Provide the name and phone number of those service companies. The key is to make yourself be a source of information .

3. Provide information of local events happening in their neighborhood. Also, you can include neighborhood statistics, such as crime percentages, traffic, new construction, park openings/closings, etc.

2. Write an email to touch base every other month, updating them on their area’s market conditions.

1. During the holiday season, send a personal christmas card; the kind that you would send all your friends and family – not a generic business like holiday card. I feel if you are a people person, and have done a successful transaction chances are that you have become friendly with your new clients.
