Every week, we ask a real estate professional for their Short List, a collection of tips and recommendations on an essential topic in real estate. This week, we talked with Todd Nordstrom, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty and president of the Nordstrom Network, shares his best places to find new clients.

The National Association of Realtors reports that over 85 percent of all real estate transactions are “repeat and referral” business. The best place to find new clients is by keeping in touch with your current and past customers and generating referrals, which we all know is the best type of customer! Here’s how:

3. Make a quick phone call – Picking up the phone after the closing to see how things are going in the new home or after the move is something most agents don’t do. Your customers will appreciate the follow-up, and it will reinforce your professionalism, communicate your confidence and open up other opportunities. Always remember to ask for a referral before hanging up!

2. Send out a personal note – A lost art, the handwritten, hand-addressed personal note is the least expensive, most impactful thing you can do to build a relationship with a customer. A “thank you” for the referral, a happy birthday message or a congratulations note after the sale all will make a lasting impact and in many cases will make their day.

1. Host a charity event/client party – Pick a favorite charity and host a party, inviting your customers, friends and past clients. Have them bring a friend to meet even more people to add to your database. You can generate leads and help out the less fortunate all at the same time!
