Housing Board approves funding in hurricane-impacted counties

by Kerrie Kennedy

The Florida Housing Finance Corporation Board of Directors recently announced approval to fund 23 developments in Florida counties impacted by hurricanes Irma and Michael.

In May, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Florida Housing’s partnership with the Department of Economic Opportunity to provide funding for the construction of new affordable workforce housing to help address housing shortages worsened by Hurricane Irma. The funding was awarded through DEO’s Rebuild Florida program, using federal funding for Florida’s long-term disaster recovery efforts.

More than $130 million was awarded to the developments, which include Saratoga Crossings and Solaris Apartments in Broward and Brownsville Transit Village, Metro Grande and Sierra Bay in Miami-Dade.

“I’m proud of our efforts to prioritize affordable housing as it is a critical component to the long-term recovery of communities impacted by recent storms,” said DeSantis in a press release. “I applaud the Florida Housing Finance Corporation for realizing this with today’s vote, and I look forward to continuing to work with FHFC and the Department of Economic Opportunity to provide the necessary resources for Floridians to rebuild.
