Construction starts continue decline in September

Nonresidential construction starts may be on the rise in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Miami Beach metropolitan area, but residential building is still facing a drop in spending.

According to Dodge Data & Analytics, residential construction starts have fallen from $329.3 million in 2016 to $287.1 million as of September, a 13 percent decrease. Following suit, spending for nonresidential construction also fell slightly last month, dropping from $492.6 million to $438.5 million.

On the plus side, in 2017, overall, there has been an increase in spending for nonresidential buildings, which is up 29 percent from last year. Residential construction starts, on the other hand, fell from $5.1 billion in 2016 to $3.7 billion this year, marking a 28 percent decrease. 

Total year-to-date construction starts for both nonresidential and residential buildings have fallen 6 percent between 2016 and 2017.
