I get it. The idea of taking on a volunteer leadership role — on top of running your real estate business — can feel overwhelming. I remember having those same concerns when I was first approached about stepping into leadership. “Will this take too much time away from my business? Will I be able to juggle it all?”
But looking back, I can tell you without hesitation — saying “yes” to leadership was one of the best decisions I ever made, both personally and professionally. In fact, rather than taking away from my business, it helped me grow it in ways I never expected.
So, if you’re hesitant about getting involved because you’re afraid it might hold you back, let me share what I’ve learned.
1. Your network will expand like never before
One of the biggest benefits of stepping into leadership is the relationships you build. You’re no longer just attending industry events — you’re part of the conversation. You’ll meet top producers, influential decision-makers and other driven professionals who can open doors to new opportunities. Some of my best referral partners are people I met through leadership, and I know I wouldn’t have connected with them otherwise.
2. You’ll sharpen your business and leadership skills
Running a successful real estate business requires strong communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills. Leadership takes these skills to the next level. You’ll gain experience leading meetings, making strategic decisions and handling challenges — all of which make you a stronger Realtor and business owner.
3. You’ll stand out as an expert in the industry
When clients and colleagues see you in leadership, they recognize you as someone who is not just involved in real estate — but invested in it. Leadership positions set you apart as a knowledgeable, trusted resource in the industry. I’ve had clients choose to work with me simply because they saw my involvement in the Women’s Council and recognized my commitment to staying engaged and informed.
4. Your business will grow in unexpected ways
Here’s something I didn’t fully realize until I was in leadership: people refer business to those they trust. When fellow Realtors across the country know you as a leader, they’re more likely to send referrals your way. I’ve personally benefited from countless referrals simply because I took the time to build relationships through leadership.
5. You’ll find personal fulfillment and growth
Beyond the business benefits, leadership is just plain rewarding. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about mentoring others, contributing to the future of our industry and making a real impact. Plus, the confidence you gain from stepping up and leading will carry over into every aspect of your life.
So, if you’re on the fence about leadership, my advice is simple: go for it. The Women’s Council of REALTORS® is an incredible platform to grow, learn and connect — all while strengthening your business.
You don’t have to choose between volunteer leadership and success in real estate. In fact, stepping up could be the very thing that takes your career to the next level.
Let’s do this together!
