Related Urban Development Group and Miami-Dade County broke ground on Serenity Liberty Square, the fourth of nine phases in the redevelopment of Miami’s historic Liberty Square public housing development.

The three-building, mixed-use development will bring 193 units of mixed-income housing to market. Those earning 30% to 80% of the area’s median income are eligible. The development will also be home to the 27 original families who lived in the neighborhood before the redevelopment. Work on this phase is scheduled to wrap up in March 2025.

“With each phase of the Liberty Square redevelopment project, Related is not just building homes, we’re building a brighter future for this historic community,” said Albert Milo, president of Related Urban Development, the affordable and workforce housing arm of Related Group. “From the beginning, our priority has been ensuring that Liberty Square continues to stand as a testament to the power of transformation and the enduring spirit of its residents. This is a significant stride towards providing more accessible and vibrant housing options.”

The property will also house the new Jessie Trice Healthcare Center, which will provide medical services to surrounding areas and serve as the headquarters for the Miami-Dade Chambers of Commerce.

When all nine phases are completed, the 60-acre Liberty Square will boast approximately 1,900 new public, affordable and market-rate apartments, a renovated historic Liberty Square Community Center, as well as new educational and healthcare facilities, a national grocer and green spaces.

Liberty Square Phase Four is funded through tax-exempt bonds, Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Equity, the Florida Housing State Apartment Incentive Loan program and the Miami-Dade County Surtax. A $2 million loan for a previous phase of Liberty Square has been repaid by Related Urban Development and will be redeployed for Phase Four.

Related Urban Development has also recently broken ground on Lincoln Gardens Elderly, a 77-unit, elderly affordable housing development in the Brownsville neighborhood, and Princeton Landings, a 334-unit, mixed-income housing community in southern Miami-Dade.
