Scammers are still targeting Miami Realtors, MAR says

A fake Florida Realtor board is once again sending letters to Florida real estate professionals in an attempt to scam them, according to a recent report by the Miami Association of Realtors.

The association sent out an updated alert Thursday advising members not to give any money to a nonexistent “Florida Board of Realtors.” Each scam letter told recipients that “Failure to respond with your 2017 Agent Board Listing may lead to closure of board listing.  Response required to be included in the Agency listing.” The letter then asked members to pay a renewal fee of $225 to the fake board, as well as send the check to an address that appears to be a Deerfield Beach post office, according to MAR.

The perpetrators even set up a “truly impressive” fake website, the group said in a release.

“It’s not a simple scam,” Florida Realtors CEO Bill Martin said in a press release. “High-tech criminals put a great deal of work and planning into this.”

Miami area Realtors were first alerted to the scam in March, when MAR said the same fake board had sent out its first round of letters.
