The Reality
In 50 years, Miami could very well become one of the most expensive sections of seabed in the world, and the first ruin of contemporary America; hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of property could be destroyed; thousands of jobs could be lost; millions would be displaced. But science tells us that while these are consequences of tomorrow, the rising sea level is still a problem of today.
In a conversation with The Guardian, atmosphere expert Professor Ben Kirtman, of the University of Miami, reaffirmed the seriousness with which South Florida governments and organizations should be approaching the problem of rising sea levels.
“Climate change is no longer viewed as a future threat around here,” he said. “It is something that we are having to deal with today.”
Thank you for this article. National Geographic just completed filming the “Future of Miami.” Its part of the “Years of Living Dangerously” series about climate change. Not sure when it will air. I imagine it will continue the every growing mind share about the severity of Miami’s future.
Hey Piper – Smiled when I saw your reply because you are so on it (staying informed).
